Welcome to Photo Symposium Asia.

Exciting and extensive planning is currently underway to for us to host the first Photo Symposium Asia event over the weekend of 19~21 May, 2017.

We call upon all photography followers, practitioners, students, educators and non-professional and professional photographers to join us for an illuminating and educational symposium weekend in Kuala Lumpur.

Always wanted to know about the benefits of a formal art or photography degree? Is formal education vital to being a successful artist? What are the alternatives to formal education and how are these rated? Know the essentials in personal self-development.

As a delegate you will listen to our specially selected presenters share their views and findings on the topic of photography education and also the opportunities available to new and emerging photographers in the region. You will also be able to share your own views, participate in open dialogue and provide feedback through one of the several Focus Group at the weekend.

Meet and Chat with the presenters, colleagues and peers during the Welcome evening over an included buffet dinner and the rest of the weekend.

Photo Symposium Asia is an ad-hoc initiative created by photographers from Asia to provide a platform for discussion on current activities within photography practice in the region.

WHAT IS THIS SYMPOSIUM ABOUT?

Photography practice – the pros and cons of formal photograpy education, availability and other forms of self-education channels.

The event will take the form of presentations and discussions on topics related to photography.

In this inaugural event, we invite presenters from the region who are making efforts in the procuring of educational and inspiring activities for young and emerging photographers at grassroots levels to share their knowledge, experience and views on photography education and the opportunities available for young photographers. They will present and discuss topics that they have first hand knowledge, that concerns the overall need for personal development and education in the photographic context.

We invite delegates to participate in the symposium and join the Focus Group discussions at the event. Each delegate is vital part of a wider community he or she would benefit from sharing their experience and thoughts through multi-lateral exchanges.

WHY IS IT NEEDED ?

Over the years, questions have been posed about the current state of photography as an art form in Malaysia and where it is heading. There may be certain critical issues not being addressed especially by the institutions, colleges and universities. We feel that an event such as this – hosted in a friendly, approachable and non-intimidating way, which allows for casual meetings amongst delegates, industry experts and colleagues through discussions and dialogues can be beneficial to all parties, and create new communities.

By breaking down traditional barriers – and to be inclusive in respect to different genres and interests – we hope the airing and sharing of new ideas and projects may lead to increased proficiency and creativity in the craft.

WHO IS THIS FOR?

This Symposium is strongly recommended for keen followers and observers in photography and it’s future as an effective communication medium in Asia in terms of personal development, formal and informal education opportunities; whether they are photographers, curators, academics, students, design artists, collectors or organisation staff. This event is non-academic but an intelligent discourse.

Meet and Chat with the presenters, colleagues and peers during the Welcome evening over an included buffet dinner and the rest of the weekend.
